XPIRAL’s “casa en los urrutias” is an extension of a small fisherman’s house, wrapped in vibrant orange waterproof cloth and made from recycled shipping containers.

XPIRAL’s team is looking for tactile and atmospheric recycling strategies when designing “casa en los urrutias.” This process began in the early stages of technology development and looked at strategies such as digital manufacturing used to create designs that can be built with common technologies and simple tools. Shipping containers are repurposed and manipulated to suit their purpose, and urban textiles feature semi-detached houses along with the climatic conditions of the Mediterranean marine environment.
XPIRAL introduces shipping containers as extended spaces attached to homes. Containers are customized with specially arranged prosthetics that allow for new spaces, including showers suitable for anthropometric measurement and daylighting windows that optimize interior lighting through multiple points. The volume is wrapped in layers of insulation with metal orange truck tarpaulin supplied by a local company. The new space was prefabricated at a nearby workshop before moving to the site.
In Seojin, there is also a case of thorough waterproofing using waterproof plywood and waterproof paint while manufacturing container facilities that are used as barbecue sites for Namhae Pension.
